The Master of the Modest
Allah (Exalted and Glorified be He) created His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in such a way that when someone saw him for the first time, he would feel awe-struck. But after talking to him, peace and blessings be upon him, for a little while, the person would feel at ease.
One day, someone went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and on seeing him, he was filled with such awe that he trembled.
However, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made the man relax by saying, “Calm down. I am not a king. I am an ordinary person whose Quraishi mother used to eat dry meat.”
Due to the Prophet’s modesty and humbleness, the man was relieved and his fear disappeared.
In fact, there are many more examples of the Prophet’s modesty. For instance, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to help his wives with the housework. He, peace and blessings be upon him, used to mend his own clothes and fix his shoes by himself.
He, peace and blessings be upon him, used to ride a donkey, wear woolen clothes, sit on the floor, milk a goat, and when one would call him, he, peace and blessings be upon him, used to reply, “At your service!”
