Loving One’s Children

One day, Usama Ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the house of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to him, wearing his (outer) garment as if he had something hidden something under it.

Usama (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “What is this you’re hiding, Allah’s Messenger?”

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, opened his garment and there appeared Al-Hassan and Al-Hussayn, his grandchildren (may Allah be pleased with them).

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said then, “Those are my grandchildren, they are the sons of my daughter. O Allah, I dearly love them. May You love them and love whoever loves them.” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi.)

Another day, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was giving a religious speech (khutbah) while standing on the pulpit. When he saw Al-Hassan and Al-Hussayn walking around and faltering, he descended from the pulpit and picked them up. Then he said, “Allah, the Magnificent, is Most Truthful, for He says, {And know that your possessions and your children are a test}. (Al-Anfal, 28)”

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, proceeded saying, “When I looked at those young children and found them walking and faltering, I could not help descending and holding them, so, I stopped speaking.” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi)

The Prophet’s love for Al-Hassan and Al-Hussayn was so great that he used to kiss them whenever he saw them. So was his love for their mother, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). He used to rejoice whenever he saw her saying, “Welcome, my daughter,” kissing her and preparing a place for her to sit beside him.
